How to make a better bread cake Recipe Notes:

  • You can also turn them into cupcakes. There's a lot of frosting, so feel free to be generous with the frosting. Or you can halve the recipe if you want to lightly coat the cupcakes. Follow package directions for cooking time.
  • This recipe will still use the ingredients listed in the package directions. But you will make some substitutions. You will turn the water into milk and add an extra egg. You will also use the oil that is in the instructions on the package. But it's the addition of heavy cream and sour cream that makes the cake even wetter!
  • If you really want to improve the chocolate taste, you can add chocolate milk instead of regular milk.
  • Place parchment paper on the bottom of the 9-inch cake pans to ensure they can be easily removed from the cake pans.

  • 1 - Box of Chocolate Cake Mix (I used Devils Food Chocolate)
  • 1 - 1.4 box of instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup of milk cream
  • Change the water in the milk according to package directions
  • Add 1 additional egg according to package directions
  • Add oil according to package directions.

Instructions for the best chocolate cake

  1. Preheat oven to 325*. Place parchment paper on 9-inch baking sheets and spray baking sheets with cooking spray. Put it aside.
  2. Mix the cake mix and the cream powder until smooth.
  3. Add the other ingredients and mix well. You must scrape the sides so that everything is well blended. Mix about 1 minute.
  4. Divide the batter between the 2 cake pans. Tap them on the counter to distribute the cake mix and remove air bubbles.
  5. Bake about 25 minutes. Stick a toothpick in the middle and if it comes out clean, it's ready. Add 2 to 3 minutes and check again until fully cooked.
  6. Let it cool completely before adding the icing.

  • 2 sticks butter, softened (1 cup)
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 2/3 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 8 cups of powdered sugar

  1. Put the butter, cocoa, hot water and vanilla in the mixer. Mix until well combined, about 1 minute.
  2. Add all the powdered sugar and turn the mixer on low heat.
  3. After all the powdered sugar is mixed in, beat on high speed until light and fluffy, about 30 seconds.
  4. Let it rest for about 10 minutes and add it to your cake!

  1. Place 1 cake layer on a plate. Add chocolate frosting - be generous!
  2. Add the second layer. I like to put the frosting on the cake and spread it out with a butter knife or mini frosting spatula.
  3. Pull the frosting down the sides of the cake to coat the sides.
  4. Finish the top of the cake and add more frosting.
  5. I put some frosting in a piping bag with aWilton 402 Open Star and swirled it around the top of the cake. I also put some stars on the bottom of the cake. But you don't have to - it's perfect without the extra icing decorations!

This is my little secret on how to make a better box cake - it's really easy and you can apply it to any box cake mix to make them taste like homemade! These bread cake hacks could be our secret!

And don't make every instruction look difficult. It just adds a few extra ingredients to a box of cake mix, so it's a breeze. And it's totally worth it to make homemade buttercream frosting. It really isn't that hard and it tastes so much better than a jar of frosting.
